A Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor
During 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was to arrange accommodation when I arrived, however upon reaching the city, a major event was in town and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate all night. With no idea quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering near the casino, reasoning it was a place to spend the night somewhere that was open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, yet, as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more individuals like that woman.
It seems I seemed lost as a female student saw me loitering in the city center and inquired if everything was alright. I explained my predicament and immediately she suggested I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered a meal: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location and secure for the evening.
In retrospect, I can appreciate what a big chance she took as a woman inviting a guy she’d just met crash at her place. In those days I existed within my own unawareness and was oblivious about things like that. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – yet very grateful.
I never did study at the Australian National University, and I never saw the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish the universe has returned her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
