Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously served in defense or security capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an vow to protect and uphold this founding document," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute commands that violate the statutes or our national charter."
The Former President's Furious Reply
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a furious reply from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats published a combined announcement denouncing the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in America," they stated. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our country with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the safety of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and retract his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who care for this country and took an vow to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that important duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of Congress telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that's historic in American history."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson said. "We see sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a video message to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She stated: "The purity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
