When a client comes to counselling sessions, they often appear composed and ready to commence the day. However after seeing this person for an extended period, I understand the truth exists underneath a polished facade.
This individual reveals that the previous night, they had taken themself "just one drink" to decompress after an exhausting day. That first serving became another, and then even more. It's a routine they've grown used to; a quiet ritual that enables the person "shut down" from the constant worries that consume their consciousness as daily life ultimately comes to an end.
Rising Pattern: Turning to Drinks to Cope With Stress
This account mirrors something that I'm noticing at a growing rate among clients. Being a counsellor, I have noticed a significant pattern: an increasing amount of individuals that are turning to drinking to cope with their anxiety.
Studies shows that approximately 34.9% of individuals who consumed drinks admitted doing so to alleviate tension and a substantial percentage to handle worry.
Acknowledging Global Distress Exposure
We exist in an era of what psychologists call contemporary stress triggers. We have never been so constantly reminded of emergencies, disputes and uncertainty. Even when we turn off our screens, the concerns continue of financial strain, work instability, ecological anxiety and mental exhaustion that comes with being without control.
This Concerning Pattern of Substance Dependency
For many, a beverage toward the conclusion of daily activities transforms into a private respite. However although drinking might appear to give temporary comfort, it can worsen anxiety with continued use, disrupting rest, heightening physical tension and eroding emotional resilience.

Occasionally, that pause can be the beginning of feeling safe anew.
