Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house close to Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who fled after the blast was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area revealed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was facing an court order due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents caused the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion included 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official believed the blast had happened on a floor above the entrance and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
