Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
