Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
Wilson's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.
Background of the Coach-QB Relationship
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M extension.
- The team finished 4-11 in his debut year prior to Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
